Travel Photos Thursday - Rain Oculus

Here's a quick post to join in Nancie's Travel Photos Thursday at her Budget Travelers Sandbox introduced to me by Jim Mcintosh

Today I'm going to share photos of the Rain Oculus at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.
Rain Oculus is a large acrylic and stainless steel structure found perched at the intersection of the shopping complex with the waterfront promenade.

This bowl-like sculpture is courtesy of Mr. Ned Kahn, an American artist and sculptor.

Rain Oculus is supposed to create a whirlpool-like effect but only when it rains maybe, through which rain water flows down into the cavaedium.  It is open to the sky at the center and below is a canal where the rain water is collected. That canal is where you can enjoy a relaxing Sampan Ride ("Sampan" means small boat), a unique and luxurious boating experience in the middle of the shopping mall.

Passers-by often think that the Rain Oculus is a wishing well so they toss in coin which will then roll down a small hole and towards the canal below where it is then collected. Those who have let the coin rolled down successfully into the hole think they will have luck and those who didn't will usually try it a few times till they are successful with it. Well it doesn't cost you a fortune anyway with just a coin or two so just go with it but don't forget to say a wish though cause who knows it may surprise you with something. Fun stuff!

It was reported that it had collected a notably handsome amount of S$22,000 in coins since its installation last year.

Safari World

I'm back but not with a vengeance.... This blog definitely cannot go to rest now especially that three young gentlemen at heart have bestowed on me an award that motivates me to continue blogging or else they'll take it back from me.... Special mention to the hearttrobs of the blogosphere: Alejandro Guzman, Jim Mcintosh and Jim Brandano.... Thanks for the recognition. It means a lot.... Mine has to wait for a while though so stay tuned for that...

Today, I'm going to be sharing pictures with you about another safari adventure that I had from the Safari World Everland Theme Park in South Korea. Unlike the Singapore's Night Safari, this tour is during daytime so there is a good opportunity to take photos of the animals in bright lights. Another difference here is that the wild animals move freely in the safari so you can't get the chance to step outside the bus  (which is the main transport for touring the entire safari) and get the chance to explore it at your own leisure time on foot. There is no walking trail whatsoever just like the ones in Singapore. But you still get the chance to get up-close with the animals like bears, tigers, lions, elephants, giraffes, camels and zebras. The highlight of this safari is the cross breed of the animal between the lion and the tiger which is known as "liger". Ever heard of such a thing? This was the first time I ever heard of such and I really saw it right before my eyes. The pictures below will show you some of the animals you can find at the Safari World.

I'm showing off, don't you see? Try to see if you could do the same...

When the bear preaches, the birds listen....

"Leave us alone", say the giraffes....

Hey, what are you looking at?

Yoga poses will never be the same again.....

Need a stretch....It has been a long day....

"I know what you're thinking", says the tiger.

I'm not a tiger. My parents just happened to be a tiger and a lion. That made me puzzled too. Geez! Call me "Liger".

Travel Photos Thursday - Singapore's Orchid Garden

I'm joining in Nancie's Travel Photos Thursday at her Budget Travelers Sandbox  which is introduced to me by Jim. Here are my photos....

The above photos are some of the orchid flowers you can find at the Orchid Garden in Singapore. The Orchid Garden is located within the Botanical Garden and although the latter is of free admission, the former needs to pay $5 for entrance free. The National Orchid Garden is an excellent photo opportunity for any photography lovers out there. It has an amazing variety of Orchids on display and very well maintained I must say. Early in the morning is the best time to visit as it is hot and humid; but, despite that it is a place where you can find serenity and calmness of your surroundings - a gorgeous place to feed your soul. It is a flower lovers utopia located in the heart of the city - a fabulous escape from the hustle and bustle of urban Singapore. Definitely an attraction not to miss when visiting this country. And, don't forget to bring your camera! It's snapshots galore when in here. :)

Singapore Night Safari

One of the most wonderful ways of spending your night under the stars and moonlight when you are in Singapore is to visit its Night Safari. It is the world's premier night zoo where over 1200 animals of over 110 exotic species to watch out for. It is a separate attraction from the Singapore zoo, though adjacent it is, and occupies around 40 hectares of secondary rainforest, bigger than that of the zoo which is about 28 hectares.

When visiting this attraction, I suggest you to be there before seven, around six o'clock would the best time to hang around and dine al fresco at Ulu Ulu Restaurant or at Bongo Burgers and get yourself a comfy spot to witness the Bornean Tribal Show at 6.30, savoring your burger whilst you will be entertained by hot tribal fire performers eating not burgers but ball of fire. Oh yes it is! And I mean it really!

After a moment with the gorgeous performers, you can soak in the night - time by hopping on a tram ride or do a walking trail to explore the entire safari. I will recommend you to see the big cats first as the feeding time is at 7.30.  Here, you will get the excitement of seeing those hungry beasts gobble up the chunks of meat right before your eyes in an instant. You should really not miss this because after these cats had their meal, they usually just curl in one corner and sleep; hence, watching them in that way will not be that fun so make the most of the opportunity during the feeding time.

Next, proceed with your planned route. If you decide on a walking agenda, move on to the leopard trail first where you can find clouded leopard as well as binturong and Malayan civet. The trails are well-lit, enough for you to see the animals, yet the lights are not bright enough to become a distraction to them. The viewing hides have floor to ceiling windows, so you will certainly get the best close-up views of the animals and their every move. In fact, you can sit there for minutes just watching them and if you are lucky enough to capture some of their best moments on camera or get snapshots of them, then that's worth the wait. On this trail, you can also find giant squirrels housed in a dome-shaped net which is 10 meters high in a specially designed walk-through exhibit. You can continue with the rest of the designated trails in the safari or hop onto the tram that will take you on a journey to eight zones in this safari which include the Southeast Asian Rainforest, African Savanna, Napalese River Valley, South American Pampas and Burmese Jungle, where you can get up close with the animals, smell nature at its best (though it can get really smelly at times), and hear the roars and howls in the midst of the jungle.

After exploring the safari, don't forget to watch the "Creatures of the Night Show", a 20-minute display of nocturnal animals in the safari including hyena, owl, beaver and many more.  There are few shows each night so if you have missed it earlier, you can always watch it later in the night. The best highlight of this show is the unexpected revelation of a whopping size reticulated python which is actually hiding in one of the row seats in front of the stage in which the visitors have no clue at all. I was there witnessing it. When the host acted out a scene that a huge snake was on the loose, the entire people were in mix hullabaloo and the scene just looked so real you would really have your heart pumping, wondering if it was really true. I was sitting on the highest level of the sitting arena so I could just watch in awe and terribly frightened too. When the visitors were asked to clear out the front row so that they could inspect if it was there, and alas, there they pulled out a huge python helped out by four strong animal trainers, that had me really dumbstricken! Geez! It made my heart pumped fast and my eyes bulged in disbelief! How in the world they could do that thing! What if...? And you know I wonder a lot so my mind was loaded with various questions. I always got nightmares of animals in the show hurting their trainers so I was just so concerned about the people below who occupied those seats. We would never know when this animal would strike you know - we could never tell and we would never know. So precautions are always important and always remember not to play with fire.

The Night Safari is open till midnight so make the most of your time when you are there. I did and although as much as I wished to heartily enjoy my dinner which consisted of a chicken-rice set, one of the most famous Singapore cuisines, I was shattered by its price. It cost me S$17 for that set and a glass of drink worth S$4 - very touristy-priced I must say, which could have cost me merely a quarter of its price when I had them at a hawker center here in Singapore. Call me cheapskate but that's just me! Oh well, there's nothing I could do about it. Tourist places like this always cost you a bomb especially in Singapore.

That's all for my Night Safari adventure so hope if you are coming to Singapore, don't miss out on this attraction.

Travelidiom Fun Saturday

no-where-land cause it's all water
Hi guys! Sorry I was not blogging the last few days. But anyways, I am back in action again. Sadly though I have to let you know that my travelidiom is on holidays and will not be around for the next few weeks or so or worse it may not appear again. I had a talk with the travelidiom creator (which is still me by the way) and she had decided that this might have to stop for awhile.... She was saying that she needed a break and was looking forward to unwind in a paradise somewhere no-where-land. Full of crap! As if there is such a place.... This had really put my nose out of joint as we were doing so well with the series and snapped, she just left like that. I have no illusions about writing idioms, as I know my English vocabulary sucks! Moreover, I have been as busy as a bee since my birthday last Thursday (31st March) - thanks to those who remembered it by the way - and I haven't had a moment to myself. I'm afraid this travelidiom series may come to a sticky end if she still doesn't email me a thing or so.

But geez, today is a Saturday and I don't really wish to disappoint you guys. I shall have to rack my brains for something to share with you anyways. It is bucketing down where I am now and I can hardly concentrate as I feel like turning in. I was deprived of sleep last night, reason being of too much thinking, contemplating and waiting until the cows come home......

Here's a video below that may seem to sound like another bit of crap but just view it anyway. Enjoy!

1. put nose out of joint - annoy or upset

2. have no illusions - be fully aware

3. as busy as a bee - very busy

4. come to a sticky end - finish in an unpleasant way

5. rack my brains - make a big effort to think of something

6. bucketing down - raining very hard

7. until he cows come home - for a long time
